Artist Statement

I make mixed media sculptures using reclaimed materials and a wide variety of techniques drawn from woodworking, leathercrafting, stonecarving, blacksmithing, stained glass and ceramics. Inspired by theatrical stage design and retail window displays, each sculpture is like a short story or vignette featuring a life-sized copper figure at its center, often accompanied by a poem. Driven by a desire to imbue neglected materials with handcrafted warmth, my subject matter is whatever I find compelling enough to be haunted by. Because I like to make everything by hand using antique tools, process plays a large role in my work. Each sculpture that I make, which can take up to a year, is accompanied by a wide variety of ‘artifacts’ that both document the work and stand alone as smaller sculptures.
